Fans of Marvel’s recent Spider-Man franchise starring Tom Holland will be intrigued by the latest mutterings coming out of the film industry – it seems the third installment may have started filming.
The news was unveiled by MCU Cosmic’s Jeremy Conrad, a Marvel tipster whose insider scoops have earned him an impressive following – he simply tweeted that Spider-Man 3 had begun shooting its first scenes.
Entertainment news site Collider also cited ‘a filming listing posted in NYC’ and ‘some particularly snoopy Twitter posts’ which lend weight to the possibility that some filming may have begun in Queens, New York.
Either way, it seems unlikely that Holland himself will have appeared in any shoots at this stage – just six days ago he posted a picture of himself on the set of Uncharted.
As for the film itself… well, we’re still waiting for full details of what it will involve.
According to the rumour mill, Benedict Cumberbatch set seems reprise his role as Doctor Strange for the third film in the franchise – the Sherlock actor will reportedly don the cloak of levitation to appear alongside the webslinger, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The casting would mark the third big crossover between the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films produced by Marvel Studios, now owned by Disney, and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man films.
Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark appeared in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Samuel L. Jackson also featured as Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).
With Cumberbatch’s character Stephen Strange already based in New York City – as well as Holland’s Peter Parker, it’s the perfect set-up. The characters first met in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, when they famously battled Thanos.
Meanwhile, Jamie Foxx has also suggested he could return to the Spider-Man universe as Electro.
The actor shared a picture to Instagram in which he all but confirmed he is returning to the role, but in the picture he chose there were multiple Spideys – perhaps a nod to the ‘Spider-Verse’ from Marvel’s recent animated adventure.
It has since been deleted, which suggests that Foxx latterly opted not to give too much away at this early stage.
We’ll have to wait and see, as ever.
You may recall that Foxx actually played a bright blue version of Electro back in the largely-forgotten Amazing Spider-Man franchise starring Andrew Garfield.
Foxx played the character in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but has since been touted for a reprise of that role, this time against Tom Holland’s version of the superhero.
Spider-Man 3 is currently scheduled to be released on 17 December 2021.
