Is it Possible to Play Dota 2 on a Steam Deck?

At the beginning of the month, Valve, the gaming behemoth that brought you Steam, announced the introduction of Steam Deck. Steam Deck is a portable gaming device that can run practically any AAA game on Steam. Its pre-orders started on July 16th, and we now have some exciting news about the games it can support.

Gabe Newell, the president of Valve Corporation, stated that Steam Deck will be able to run Dota 2 flawlessly. A Redditor apparently emailed Gabe Newell about Steam Deck’s Dota 2 capabilities, and Newell responded affirmatively. How can you not believe anything if the president of a firm admits it?

In addition, Newell stated clearly in an interview with IGN,

“WELL, I DO IMMEDIATELY PLAY DOTA WITH EACH NEW VERSION THAT I GET SO I’VE PROBABLY BEEN A LITTLE MORE LASER-FOCUSED ON THE USABILITY TESTING”.

As Newell is a gaming aficionado, it seems evident that Dota 2 can run on Steam Deck. We can believe this man’s statement, but is it really worth it to play Dota 2 on Steam?

Is It Any Good?

Due to its small screen, playing Dota 2 on a Steam Deck may not be a viable option. Even with a mouse and keyboard connected to the Steam Deck, the 7″ screen is inadequate for gaming. Players may be unable to understand what is going on in the game, especially if a frenzied team fight breaks out.

In any case, it has the potential to deliver a radically different type of experience for the participants. In a professional Dota 2 team setup, Steam Deck can be a very useful tool for coaches. They can use it to rapidly watch and analyze replays in the Steam Deck after a match. It will be fascinating to see whether professional players employ Steam Deck in their games. Till then, we know for sure that Dota 2 will in fact run on Valve’s Steam Deck.
