The trailer, which is told from the perspective of Steph Gingrich — the “radio host, dungeon master, and haven maven” you might know from Before the Storm – takes you on a whistle-stop tour of Haven Springs, explaining why Steph thinks it’s “the place to be.” We meet a few new characters – regrettably, none are properly introduced – and have a look at the local bar’s little arcade games.

The video description screams, “A bold new era of the award-winning Life is Strange begins, with an all-new playable lead character and an exciting mystery to uncover!” “Alex Chen has long hidden her ‘curse,’ which is the extraordinary capacity to sense, absorb, and manipulate others’ intense emotions, which she perceives as flaming, colored auras.

“When her brother dies in a so-called accident, Alex must embrace her volatile power to find the truth – and uncover the dark secrets buried by a small town.”

ICYMI, Johnathan Zimmerman, the Narrative Director of Deck Nine, recently revealed a little more about Alex’s Empathy power in Life is Strange: True Colors.

“Alex’s psychic gift of Empathy is brought to life in Life is Strange: True Colors through innovative gameplay and cinematic experiences,” Zimmerman remarked at the time. “Auras around other characters express emotions, which can erupt into novas of light and colour if the feeling becomes excessive. Each of these encounters changes Alex’s life, providing her with crucial insights into another person while also threatening to absorb her own consciousness.”

The studio was able to “push the conventions of traditional Life is Strange storytelling, employing the tangible audio-visual representation of emotive sensations to drive the same response in the player that Alex herself feels each time,” after admitting the development team struggled with “how to capture something as abstract as emotions.”

Life is Strange: True Colors is expected to release on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch on September 10, 2021.
