According to a recent rumor from THR, Universal Studios is joining up with Peacock for a resurrection of the horror classic The Exorcist. The forthcoming revival will be a direct sequel to the cult classic horror film from 1973. In addition, fans of the film will be pleased to learn that the sequel is only the first in a trilogy planned by the production studio.

Leslie Odom Jr. will feature in the upcoming reincarnation of The Exorcist, with Ellen Burstyn reprising her role as Chris MacNeil from the original. According to the article, the first of the three proposed films will be directed by David Gordon Green. The first installment of the trilogy is set to hit theatres on October 13, 2023.
The sequel to The Exorcist will be authored by Peter Sattler and directed by David Gordon Green. Executive producers include Jason Blum, David Robinson, James Robinson, Green, Danny McBride, and Couper Samuelson. In addition, in collaboration with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, Universal and Peacock secured the worldwide rights to produce new IP based on The Exorcist property.
“There’s no better moment to be joining forces with the team at Peacock, reuniting with the excellent team at Universal, and finally getting to work with my friends at Blumhouse,” said David Robinson, President of Morgan Creek, in a recent statement.
According to THR, Peacock’s acquisition of this franchise’s resurrection may help the streaming platform catch up to streaming leaders Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. The re-release of the hugely popular and highly acclaimed horror film will bring in a lot more viewers and may even help subscribers expand.

When the first The Exorcist picture was released in 1973, it became an instant hit. According to estimates, the picture has made a total of $441 million. The movie received ten Academy Award nominations, including best picture and best director.
Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller, and Linda Blair were also nominated for Academy Awards. The original film followed a 12-year-old girl who was possessed by an unknown monster.
